Summerwood Community Association
Summerwood Community Association

There are several ways to describe the Summerwood community but one always jumps to mind first: beautiful. With numerous amenities, including lakes, nature trails, two swimming pools, a splash pad, two clubhouses, tennis courts, volley ball courts and more, this home to more than 3,200 families is one of the nicest in the area.

Another one word description could be said for the homeowners association: that word is successful. With a large group of dedicated volunteers, the Summerwood Community Association sets goals and successfully implements them. This last year was another great year with many accomplishments of which to be proud.

As the largest consumer of water in the three districts that service the community, the Association set a goal to significantly decrease their water consumption. In a two year period, the Association has decreased their water usage by almost 50 percent! The Association has also completed multiple large maintenance projects such as a remodel of one of the clubhouse restrooms and fitness centers, and a refurbish of the entrance waterfalls.

Another large project nearing completion is the introduction of a new community park. Like many, the members of the Summerwood C.A. Board of Directors were deeply affected by the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14, 2012. With any horrific tragedy that is widely known, one difficult aspect for the public is how to move forward without forgetting. The idea was born to create a memorial park in honor of those lost during that tragic event. During the very early planning stages, this area was referred to as the Sandy Hook Park. Unfortunately, Sandy Hook is not the first and it is unlikely it will be the last mass shooting that we will see in our lifetimes.

As planning and discussion went on, the concept for the park evolved. Rather than a park that honors one event, the new goal was to create a peaceful area that would serve as a place to reflect upon anything or anyone. The Board wanted to create a serene and relaxing park that would be a nice setting for residents to simply sit and think, unwind, or maybe just enjoy nature. This area was ultimately named Reflection Park.

The Beautification Committee was charged with the task of providing recommendations for Reflection Park based on the Board’s vision. They partnered with the community’s landscape management company, The Spencer Company, and created landscape designs for the park which included new trees, beds with flowering shrubs, benches and a water feature. Several additional trees were planted during an Arbor Day event in April 2014. The committee also joined forces with several area Girl Scout troops for further tree plantings in Reflection Park. The finishing touches include a rustic sign, log benches, and a rock waterfall.

The volunteers, including the Board of Directors and many committees, continue every day to make a difference. Many thanks to the community volunteers that work to support these efforts!
